Ms. Maggie and the superheroes
As we complete our unit on the states of matter, students were introduced to another measurement of matter that is not volume or weight. This measurement is called density. Students read and watched information describing density and how it applies to solids and liquids. Why do we float on water, while a paperclip sinks? How come liquids separate as layers when added to a jar, rather than mix together? To get hands on with these concepts, the Superheroes created Density Jars. Each group was given 4 liquids to test. Which will sink? Which will float? Which will sit on top of another? Why? Students were asked to make hypotheses first, experiment, and then describe their results. Since we have been practicing the Scientific Method all year, moving through these steps was natural for these second graders.

In honor of the March Madness basketball tournament, We have made our own version with book brackets. Everyone was separated into a group and voted which of two books should win in the first round and move on to the next round. Since we have been working on persuasive paragraphs this quarter, everyone wrote a persuasive paragraph with reasons and examples that their vote should win. We had the first round last Friday and everyone did an awesome job with their paragraphs. Who do you think will win?
We made cards for veterans today in reading buddies. It was awesome to see our superheroes being leaders and helping their young friends sound out words and decorate the cards together!
Yesterday, students were invited to try out for the Second Grade Talent show, called 2nd Grade's Got Talent! We had a variety of acts including bike riding tricks, caricatures, gymnastics, comedy acts, magic, vocalists, dance and instrumental performances. Students came prepared with their equipment, scripts and energy! It was fun for all! All students who participated have been given a role in our show. Look forward to our performance on Wednesday, November 30 at 10:30 AM (Reading Buddies time) on the Green Hill. We hope to see you there!
Today we read "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" with our reading buddies. Then, we worked with our buddies to create our own pumpkins. The Superheroes were all so kind and synergized with their buddies. It was amazing to see how creative the pumpkins were. They all had the same supplies to begin with, but their pumpkins turned out as unique as they are! The pumpkins are up in our classroom window if you would like to come see them.
During our first Social Studies unit of the year, our amazing students created maps of their own make believe cities! Every student correctly created a key with matching symbols. They also made sure to include a title and compass rose. It is amazing to see their creativity and what amazing leaders these second graders are!
