Ms. Laurie and the owls
If we truly want to prepare our students for the real world, we need to put them in responsive, dynamic environments that reflect life outside of a traditional classroom. And what’s that life outside like? Full of choices, where adults are responsible for their own learning. Seating options for students are meeting the kids’ needs and also allowing them the responsibility and flexibility to choose where they will learn best for the day. Having these choices will help them be in control of their actions and their day. This is why I would like to provide students with the choice to stand during the day. They could sit on a stability ball which helps their bodies stay focused on learning and not playing.

We had a variety of acts including bike riding tricks, caricatures, gymnastics, comedy acts, magic, vocalists, dance and instrumental performances. Students came prepared with their equipment, scripts and energy! It was fun for all! All students who participated have been given a role in our show. Look forward to our performance on Wednesday, November 30 at 10:30 AM (Reading Buddies time) on the Green Hill. We hope to see you there!
As the Second Graders continue to practice the Scientific Inquiry Process with weekly experiments, we explore yet another human body system, the Digestive System. Students were assigned roles and mimicked a meal traveling through our organs.
Students were provided with a plastic bag that represented our stomachs, cheese cloth to represent the small intestine, a paper plate on which to catch the "nutrients" and two cups used to collect the "waste". The students assigned to "Saliva" added water. The students assigned to "Stomach Acid" added orange juice to break down the food. Two students in each group added the bananas and crackers which represented a "meal". Students enjoyed "chewing the food" by crumbling ingredients into the bag, making their stomach's "churn" by twisting and squeezing the bag, ringing out the "intestine" to catch the "nutrients", and pushing the "waste" out of the bottom of their cups. We learned a lot and had a ton of fun! The Owl's helped their reading buddies write a page in their books. They worked together to write about the five senses.
This is Ms. Laurie's third year at Tucson Country Day School. Her first two years were spent in Kindergarten. Now, she is ready to try out Second Grade.
Ms. Laurie went back to school in 2010 for her teaching certification, after working in recreation for seven years. She moved to Tucson from Pennsylvania in 2013 for her first teaching job. |
